Whether your skin is oily all over or just in places, you can recognize the places where your oil glands over-produce sebum by their telltale midday shine. In addition to a tendency to shine, oily skin may also be more prone to acne than other skin types, and often needs a little special care to look its best.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid soaks up oil and cleans out pores to keep acne from forming, making it an essential part of an oily skin care regimen. Allure magazine recommends looking for a daily cleanser that contains 2 percent salicylic acid to get maximum benefits without drying out your skin. Higher concentrations of salicylic acid can cause skin irritation and dryness, which may stimulate your oil glands to step up production, explains dermatologist and psychiatrist Amy Wechsler in Marie Claire magazine.

Zinc or Titanium Oxide

Sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is essential for every day, says Wexler. Wearing sunscreen protects your skin from sun damage that can cause aging, and it helps to minimize your skin's oil production. Look for a mineral-based sunscreen that contains zinc or titanium oxide--these ingredients absorb oil while filtering harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Willow Bark

A natural salicyte, willow bark, shows up in toners and skin cleansers designed for oily skin because of its ability to soak up oil. Elle magazine recommends looking for a toner or facial wipes containing willow bark for midday skin touch-ups--it's less drying than washing your face every time it starts to look oily.

If oily skin makes your makeup run, look for cosmetics and skin care products that contain silicone, recommends Allure. Most skin care products melt when they get hot, causing acne-producing clogs in your skin. Using silicone-based products creates a protective barrier for your skin that protects it from melting makeup.

If you have time for a mask, choose one that contains clay. It's a natural oil-absorber that will soak up excess oil to clear your pores and make your skin have more of a matte finish.
