Ingredients in Proactiv Refining Mask
Proactiv Refining Mask, is advertised as a "bonus gift" with the three piece Proactiv anti-acne treatment. Sulfur as a main ingredient provides another proven treatment addition to the already benzoyl peroxide-rich system. It comes in a 1-oz. bottle to use two to three times a week for best results. Sulfur allergy patients should refrain from the bonus items in the set.
The Proactiv Refining Mask has a 6 percent solution of sulfur as its active ingredient. Sulfur kills bacteria on the skin's surface and improves acne, psoriasis and seborrhea skin conditions. You can find this active ingredient in many over-the-counter soaps and shampoos along with acne medications.
Antioxidants fight against free radical damage on the skin. Tocopherol, geranium maculatum extract, also known as cranesbill, and tocopheryl acetate fall into the antioxidant category. Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate are vitamin E formulas and can fight against UV sun damage too. Oil-soluble agents like vitamin E can moisturize the skin and aid in hydration.
Agents that absorb water and oil from the face such as hydrated silica, kaolin and magnesium aluminum silicate aid personal care products in drying. Magnesium aluminum silicate, while absorbing, works like an anti-caking agent and keeps the product from lumping.
Preservatives function by keeping a mixture safe from the growth of bacteria, mold and fungi. Parabens work well, and are used widely in cosmetics because they won't irritate skin. Parabens in Proactiv Refining Mask include ethylparaben and methylparaben.
Thickeners keep individual chemicals bound together to form a product, a form of a bulking agent. Thickeners in the mask include glycereth-26, cetearyl alcohol, zinc oxide and ceteareth-20.
Antibacterial agents kill and repress the regrowth of bacteria on the skin. Cymbopogon schoenanthus extract (or lemongrass) and melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil (or tea tree oil) are antibacterials. Tea tree oil reduces blemishes and oiliness of the skin, according to "Healthnotes Review of Complementary and Integrative Medicine."
Surfactants make products glide easier across the skin, lowering the surface tension. Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, a surfactant, boosts foam production in many personal care products and is used in this mask for its gliding properties.
Humectants deliver water and moisture into the skin and help keep it there. They lower dryness and flaking in skin's appearance. Butylene glycol is a humectant and also helps active ingredients in the product penetrate the surface of the skin.
Additives with various uses include ethoxydiglycol, used here as a solvent to dissolve other additives and as a degreasing agent. Linoleic acid hydrates skin but also creates emulsions and can sometimes be referred to as vitamin F. Linolenic acid, or AHA (alpha-linolenic acid), is an omega-3 fatty acid treatment for acne. Lastly, titanium oxide works as a powerful UVA and UVB sunscreen.
