Inactive Ingredients in Metrogel Inactive Ingredients in Metrogel

MetroGel contains metronidazole, a drug that can prevent the growth of bacteria and other organisms. MetroGel is a topically applied medication that is used to treat rosacea, or acne rosacea, states the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that is characterized by inflammation and sores. MetroGel may be used to treat other topical infections when prescribed by a medical professional. There are several inactive ingredients in MetroGel that give it its gel consistency.

Stabilizers

Several ingredients found in MetroGel serve the purpose of allowing the active ingredient, metronidazole gel, to bond with the other substances. When this bonding takes place the gel solution contains not only a gel but also the active ingredient. Without such stabilizing ingredients, the active ingredient may not be effectively applied to the skin. Examples of these ingredients include betadex and edetate disodium.

Thickener

Hydroxyethyl cellulose, or HEC, is an ingredient that thickens the mixture of all MetroGel ingredients to give the necessary texture for spreading.

Preservatives

Preservatives are important in MetroGel because they prevent the drug from breaking down after manufacturing. Most drugs have a set shelf-life after which the active ingredients may no longer be effective. Preservatives found in MetroGel, as indicated by Drugs.com, include methylparaben, phenoxyethanol and propylparaben. Methylparaben and propylparaben have antifungal and antibacterial properites, and aid MetroGel in combating rosacea.

Skin Treatment

The Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database explains that propylene glycol conditions the skin and can provide fragrance. Niacinamide is commonly found in acne products, and is part of the vitamin B group, states OralChelation.com.
