Overview

Blackheads are nothing more than a partially clogged pore. Also called a comedone, blackheads occur when a pore gets clogged with dead skin cells, oil and bacteria, according to the website AcneNet. You can get rid of blackheads with some simple skin care procedures; just don't try to pick or extract the blackheads yourself. This could irritate the pore, worsen the blackhead, cause an infection or leave scarring.

Step 1

Wash your skin using a mild cleanser twice a day. Use a mild over-the-counter formulation to remove oil and dead skin cells and help prevent new blackheads from forming.

Step 2

Use alpha-hydroxy acid on the affected area. AHAs come in cleansers, scrubs and gel formulations. Apply it all over your face to encourage dead skin cells to slough off more quickly, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. With fewer dead skin cells on your face, the less likely it is you'll develop blackheads.

Step 3

Apply a prescription topical retinoid cream. Sold under brand names such as Differin or Retin-A, this medication, which is derived from vitamin A, encourages dead skin to slough off more quickly when applied once a day for several weeks, notes UMMC. Retinoid creams help unclog your pores and encourage blackheads to disappear.

Step 4

Undergo an extraction procedure in your dermatologist's office to remove deeply set, large or severe blackheads. This outpatient procedure involves your dermatologist using a small, sterile tool to extract the material within the affected pore, according to AcneNet. You may be prescribed a topical cream to apply to prevent infection or the reappearance of the blackhead.
