Acne causes the skin to become more inflamed and sensitive than normal, and because of this certain alterations must be made when cleansing the skin. Standard commercial soaps that are formulated for treating acne-prone or oily skin should be avoided, as they typically contain chemical ingredients that are too harsh for sensitive or irritated skin. Luckily, there are a few cleansing methods that can clean acne-prone skin without causing further irritation.

Step 1

Clean acne-prone skin with castor oil. Castor oil is highly purgative and non-comedogenic, which means it can flush out the pores without causing them to become clogged again. To cleanse the skin with castor oil, spread 1 tsp. of the oil onto the skin, and massage it in deeply using the fingertips. The will cause the castor oil to bond to the trapped oils and impurities in the pores. After three minutes, lay a steaming hot washcloth over the face, which forces the steam to penetrate the pores, opening them up to release the entrapment. Once the cloth cools down completely, use the washcloth to wipe away the oil. Castor oil can be used to clean the skin twice per day; once on the morning and again in the evening.

Step 2

Clean acne-prone skin with a soap designed for sensitive skin. Soaps formulated for sensitive skin will be free of perfumes, dyes and additives that cause a topical reaction on the skin. Wet the face, then lather up the hands thoroughly using the sensitive skin soap. Spread the lather over the skin gently, gliding the fingers over the face. Avoid rubbing the soap in or scrubbing the skin. After the lather has been spread over the skin, rinse off the skin completely with water. A sensitive skin soap can be used up to three times per day.

Step 3

Clean acne-prone skin with baking soda. Baking soda is a highly alkaline substance that sloughs off dead skin, oils, dirt and other impurities while killing off acne-causing bacteria at the same time. To use baking soda as a cleanser for acne-prone skin. it must first be combined with water in order for it to make a mud-like paste. Mix 1 tsp. of water with 1 tbsp. of baking soda, then spread it around a moistened face. Use the fingers to gentle massage it around the skin for one minute, then rinse off the skin with water. Baking soda should only be used once per day as a cleanser for acne-prone skin types.
