How to Wash Your Face to Get Rid of Acne How to Wash Your Face to Get Rid of Acne

It is a common misconception that acne is the result of unclean skin and easily remedied by extensive cleansing, states the Acne Resource Center. On the contrary, poor hygiene may contribute to acne but the constant scrubbing and cleansing with harsh chemicals, which are often found in commercial products, does the skin more harm than good. Using gentle and natural ingredients to cleanse the face may help promote healthier, smoother skin to heal acne.

Herbal treatments are popular alternatives to commercial acne products; however, there lacks concrete scientific data that illustrates its influence on acne-prone skin. Always seek the advice of a medical professional before beginning a new skin treatment.

Daily Cleanser for Acne

Step 1

Combine 1/2 cup of whole grain oatmeal, 1/4 cup baking soda and 6 tbsp. of lemon juice in a small bowl. Oatmeal contains silicon and other minerals that help soothe acne-prone skin by reducing inflammation, irritation and redness, according to the RN Guide to Skin Care website. Baking soda is a gentle but effective natural exfoliator that sloughs away dead skin cells or other debris, which can clog pores. Lemon juice also helps even skin tone and acts as a mild exfoliant.

Step 2

Mix the ingredients together until the lemon juice evenly distributes throughout the dry oatmeal and baking soda.

Step 3

Apply to the face in circular motions, avoiding the eyes and lips. Rinse with lukewarm water. This cleanser is safe to use both the mornings and before you go to sleep every day.

Weekly Facial Mask for Acne-Prone Skin

Step 1

Whisk 1 egg white together with 1/4 cup olive oil, 5 drops of lavender oil and 1 tbsp. of unpasteurized honey in a bowl. An egg mask helps firm skin, reduces redness and inflammation, and promotes fewer breakouts, according to the Planet Green Discovery Channel website. Olive oil helps rebuild damaged skin while giving sebum a better consistency, states the Disabled World website.

Lavender oil is naturally antiseptic, which helps ward off acne-causing bacteria or impurities while nourishing the skin. However, its direct effect on acne lacks scientific data. Additionally, honey is a natural humectant and antioxidant that attracts and holds moisture while fighting free radical damage often needed for acne-prone skin.

Step 2

Apply the mask directly to the face and neck. Allow to dry for approximately 15 minutes.

Step 3

Rinse with warm water followed by a cold-water rinse to close the pores. This mask is safe enough to use once a week for all acne-prone skin types.
