Overview

Acne can feel painful and inflamed, and can be easily exacerbated by soaps and cleansers that contain harsh chemicals. Using a traditional acne soap isn't the only way to cleanse acne-prone skin; there are a few different ways to cleanse skin with acne that won't inflame or irritate the skin. You can naturally and gently cleanse the skin while allowing other products to be used without interacting poorly with a chemical cleanser.

Step 1

Wash the face using baking soda. Baking soda is a high-alkaline substance that helps to slough away dead skin cells while killing off acne-causing bacteria. Baking soda makes an effective cleanser for acne-prone skin that cleans the face without drying it out or irritating it. To clean the skin with baking soda, combine 2 tbsp. baking soda with 1 tsp. water. Spread the mixture onto the face using the fingers, and gently rub it around the face using small, circular motions. After 1 to 2 minutes, rinse off the skin well with water. This type of cleansing can be used once per day.

Step 2

Wash the face using castor oil, a non-comedogenic oil that doesn't clog pores when applied to the skin. Castor oil is highly effective in purging the pores, and can be applied to the skin twice per day to clean acne-prone skin. Pour 2 tbsp.castor oil into the hands and spread it liberally on the skin. Use the fingers to massage it into the skin deeply. This may feel uncomfortable at first, but keep in mind that castor oil doesn't clog pores. After two minutes, fill a bowl with steaming hot water and lean 12 to 18 inches over the bowl. Cover the head with a towel to allow the steam to envelop the face. This opens pores and releases clogged oils and impurities. After five minutes, wipe off the oil with a moistened washcloth.

Step 3

Wash the face using a soap designed for sensitive skin types. Acne-prone skin should be treated gently to avoid irritating or exacerbating the skin. Although many people use a soap designed for acne-prone or oily skin types, it's more effective to cleanse the skin with a soap designed for sensitive skin types. A sensitive skin soap cleans the skin effectively without damaging it. Lather the soap in your hands, then spread the lather onto a moistened face. Smooth the lather over the face for a few seconds, then rinse it off well with water. You can cleanse the skin with a sensitive skin soap twice per day.
