How to Use Proactiv Perfectly
Proactiv, a wildly popular acne treatment system, comes with three bottles per kit that nee to be used in a certain order to obtain the best results. A cleaner comes first, followed by a toner, and finally a repairing lotion. According to the Proactiv website, the combination therapy of using all three products together will give you better results than using them individually. While reviews are mixed, you can evaluate how well Proactiv works for you by using it perfectly for one month and then evaluating.
Begin with the Renewing Cleanser, marked with a number one in your kit. It is the larger of the two opaque white bottles. Wet your face with warm water, and squeeze a small amount, about the size of a dime onto the tips of your fingers. Massage your fingers in a circular motion on your face or anywhere on your body where you are prone to acne. Massage for 1 to 2 minutes and rinse off. You can use the Renewing Cleanser in the morning and at night, but start with just one until your skin adjusts to it.
Allow your skin to dry. Dampen a cotton ball with a small amount of Revitalizing Toner and use the cotton ball to swab the toner all over your skin. Again, start with one application per day, and as long as your skin responds well, move to two applications per day. The toner includes alcohol, which can be very drying to the skin.
Wait for the toner to dry. Squeeze a small, pea-sized amount of the Repairing Lotion onto your fingers. Massage it into your skin, concentrating on problem areas. The Proactiv website advises against spot treatment, as the Repairing Lotion can also help prevent breakouts from forming. Wear an old T-shirt when applying the lotion, as it contains benzoyl peroxide and can bleach some clothing. Use once per day, and if your skin responds well, move to two applications per day.
Use the included mask one to two times per week. Dampen your face, and apply the mask to all of your face. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes, or until the mask feels dry to the touch. Wash off with a warm, wet washcloth and apply a light moisturizer to combat any drying. You can also use the mask as a spot treatment; dab some on an emerging blemish before you go to bed, and rinse off in the morning.
Be consistent with the system. Make sure that you don't skip days, and consistently use the products for one month before evaluating whether you want to continue. if the products cause any sort of rash or irritation, stop using them and see your dermatologist.
