How to Use Heat to Clear Acne
Acne can be a real annoyance. Sometimes you try everything -- cold compresses, anti-inflammatory medicines, topical treatments -- and nothing works. Or maybe you need to get rid of your acne fast because you have an important meeting or a date. Although no treatment is 100 percent effective, heat is a good option to try when you want to get rid of acne quickly. Acne-clearing heat devices work by applying a low level of heat that destroys the acne bacteria. The heat is programmed at the level needed to kill bacteria, but below the level that will burn your skin.
Purchase an acne-clearing heat device, such as the Zeno HotSpot or Thermaclear. Such devices can be purchased in beauty stores, drug stores or online. (References 1, 2, 3)
Read the directions carefully. The amount of time that you will need to apply the device to your skin varies with the brand that you purchase.
Try the device out on part of your skin that is not readily visible, besides your face, to see how the heat setting will affect you. Some brands offer two different heat settings and it is best to start at the lowest level. If you have sensitive skin, this step is especially important.
Turn on the device and place the tip lightly on your blemish. Leave the device in place for one cycle. Some brands, such as ThermaClear, only take two seconds for a cycle but also use a higher temperature. Other brands, such as Zeno, have a cycle that runs a little over two minutes and will beep more than once when complete.
Turn off the device and do not reapply the heat immediately. You should use the device on the blemish no more than two or three times a day. Most devices will work best within the first 24 hours.
