Overview

If you or someone you know is experiencing moderate to severe acne, a physician may prescribe Accutane (isotretinoin) to help. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, Accutane can be effective for scarring acne that is unresponsive to other types of treatment. Proper use is vital to getting the most out of this Accutane, which can lead to clearer, acne-free skin.

Step 1

Take Accutane exactly as directed by your doctor. Keep a small calendar next to your Accutane and make a check mark when each time you take a capsule--a simple and easy way to ensure that you are taking your dose regularly, but without exceeding the prescribed amount.

Step 2

Swallow your capsule of Accutane whole. Do not crush, break or chew the capsule. Take your Accutane with a full glass of water (approximately 8 oz.) and with food.

Step 3

Manage your side effects with some simple items, available at most local grocery stores and pharmacies. Keep a lip moisturizer handy, since chapped lips is the most commonly reported side effect of the medication. Use a skin moisturizing cream and nasal gel to manage other dryness symptoms.

Step 4

Keep the cap on your Accutane pill bottle when you're not using it. Store your Accutane at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture.

Step 5

Schedule blood tests with your prescribing physician for the duration of the time you use Accutane. Regular blood tests and discussions with your physician, however, minimize the risk of serious side effects, including high levels of blood fats and liver damage.
