How to Unclog Clogged Pores
Overview
Clogged pores are often the result of a build-up of sebum (oil), sweat, dirt or excess skin around a hair follicle. Although clogged pores can develop anywhere on your body, the face is where the condition is most often seen. The term 'blackhead' refers to a partially clogged pore, while a 'whitehead' describes a pore clogged completely with debris. Unclogging your pores requires the use of products that bring the contents of your pores to the surface of your skin.
Step 1
Massage your skin with an exfoliating face wash. Apply the exfoliating face wash to your skin with your fingertips. Rinse the exfoliating face wash away with a cool water rinse. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
Step 2
Spread a toner that contains salicylic acid over your clean skin, nightly. Saturate a cotton ball with the salicylic acid-based toner. Apply the toner liberally to the skin on your face. Allow your skin to air dry.
Step 3
Apply a facial mask specifically designed to help unclog pores once a week. Several types of masks are available, including clay masks and peel-off facial masks. Simply apply and remove the mask according to manufacturer's instructions.
Step 4
Give your skin a steam bath once or twice a week. Simply bring a pot of water to a boil on your stove top. Remove the pot from the stove once the water boils and place it on a sturdy heat-tolerant surface. Drape a towel over your head and stand approximately 18 inches above the steam for three to five minutes.
Step 5
Speak to your doctor if your clogged pores persist. Your doctor may choose to write you a prescription for topical treatments that contain pharmaceutical-strength remedies to unclog your pores.
