Overview

Blackheads are a kind of acne that is created by dead skin cells and excess oils that collect in the ducts of your sebaceous (fatty or oily) glands. These oils clog up your hair follicles and become black when exposed to light and oxygen. Blackheads can appear unattractive and might even hurt, but there are many ways you can treat severe blackheads and prevent the outbreak of more. You can use natural remedies like eating a more wholesome diet, exfoliating and steaming to do so.

Step 1

Exfoliate your skin. Massage your face using dry, clean fingers, or use a soft exfoliating brush to do so. By exfoliating, you can eradicate dead skin cells from the surface layer of your skin; by removing these, you prevent them from clogging your pores and irritating your newer skin (both of which are responsible for causing blackhead breakouts).

Step 2

Use a light moisturizer to avoid dryness after you exfoliate. You shouldn't leave your face too dry after exfoliating, as this can cause irritation, wrinkles and more blackheads to develop on your skin.

Step 3

Use some steam to clean your face. Boil water and bring your face close enough to it so that your face can catch the steam vapors. This can soften blackheads and ease removal; some can even fall off when you put your head over the steaming water. Apply gentle pressure with your fingers after steaming to squeeze out any blackheads that remain. Make sure you do not use your fingernails--dirt underneath your nails can get into your pores and cause you to develop an infection.

Step 4

Consult a dermatologist to discover whether specific types of food you consume are causing your personal blackhead breakouts. Introduce more green vegetables and fish oils to your diet--these foods have a great deal of vitamin A, which helps enhance your skin's health. You can also heal your skin tissue through consuming lean meats, eggs, peanuts and whole grains. Avoid eating foods that cause your stress levels to rise and cause breakouts of acne, including fatty foods and caffeine.
