Do you feel like you could peer into your pores like you do a mirror? If you answered yes, you have open pores, which can be due to simple genetics, a poor skin-care routine or even stress. These also can make your skin appear oily or make you more prone to breakouts. With a specialized skin-care routine and extra attention to the products you utilize, you can experience a reduction in open pores.

Step 1

Utilize a face wash that has vitamin C or retinol. These ingredients are known as antioxidants, which help to fight skin damage and free dirt from the pores--both of which have been known to cause open pores. First wet your face with warm water, then gently massage the face wash onto your face. Rinse well. Cleanse your face twice daily--once in the morning and again in the evening (even if your skin doesn't "feel" dirty).

Step 2

Apply a topical treatment that contains vitamin A or alpha hydroxy acids. Both of these creams contain chemicals that help to eliminate dead skin from the face. Because dead skin cells can enter your pores, causing clogging or making your pores even larger, this topical application can prevent pores from growing larger--or reducing any pores that may be open.

Step 3

Apply a sunscreen of sun protection factor 15 or higher. The retinol you applied earlier makes you more subject to sunburn, and the sun can actually enlarge pores by damaging the outer rim of pores. This can create scar tissue that is not able to reduce. Wearing a regular sunscreen can keep pores from becoming larger.

Step 4

Exfoliate your skin twice weekly, using a gentle exfoliating scrub. Exfoliation can minimize pores' appearance by reducing the amount of dead skin on the face. Scrub the skin gently but not to the point where exfoliation is painful.

Step 5

Seek microdermabrasion treatments from a local esthetician or dermatologist. Microdermabrasion uses a specialized wand in order to exfoliate the top layer of skin, revealing healthier skin underneath. Because this treatment is deeper than weekly exfoliation, it's important to only undergo microdermabrasion treatments once every three weeks.
