Overview

Dealing with regular acne can be difficult enough, but developing nodular acne can make you want to hide away in a hole forever. The nodules are lesions that develop beneath the skin, resulting in hard, inflamed bumps. If these lesions rupture, they can lead to serious scarring and disfigurement. To avoid this, you will need to take extra steps to treat your nodular acne that go beyond the standard drugstore offerings.

Step 1

Apply topical creams and medications to treat your nodular acne. Benzoyl peroxide is available over the counter and works by killing acne bacteria and soaking up excess oil. Topical retinoids are another option that encourages your skin to shed dead cells faster to unclog your pores and prevent future blemishes. A prescription form of this medication is called Retin-A.

Step 2

Visit your dermatologist to have corticosteroids injected into your nodules. During this procedure, each nodule will be injected, encouraging speedy healing from the outside in. This reduces the chances of the nodule rupturing and causing scars.

Step 3

Take antibiotics to clear up your acne. Nodular acne can be very persistent and deeply set into the skin, which means it requires an all-out attack to get rid of it. Oral antibiotics kill the bacteria that causes acne, allowing your current blemishes to heal without the threat of new ones forming. Commonly prescribed forms include tetracycline, erythromycin and doxycycline.

Step 4

Obtain a prescription for isotretinoin from your dermatologist. This drug commonly goes by the brand name Accutane and is one of the strongest acne drugs on the market. It's used for very severe cases of cystic and nodular acne. It works by shrinking your oil glands and preventing new breakouts from forming. Serious side effects can accompany this drug, however, so take that under consideration before committing to treatment.
