Overview

Brown spots on the skin often arrive with age. In areas of the skin that have been exposed to sunlight for a lifetime such as the hands, face, feet, chest and arms, brown spots may start to appear around age 40. The brown spots are flat and vary in size. They are not dangerous or painful. Their appearance is a cosmetic annoyance to some people as they age. Brown spots do not impact health unless they are found to be cancerous; however, this is rare.

Ways to Treat Brown Spots

Step 1

Using a commercially available product to lighten the tone of the skin helps fade brown spots. These skin-bleaching products will gradually lighten the color of the brown spots.

Step 2

Using cold therapy treatment helps remove brown spots. It is possible to use cryotherapy (applying cold to the brown spot) to remove the brown spot. This procedure is performed by a doctor.

Step 3

Use of a laser is also effective at removing brown spots. A dermatologist will use a laser to easily remove brown spots from the skin. This treatment may require numerous sessions to remove all of brown spots that bother a patient.

Step 4

Use of a chemical peel is another way to remove brown spots. A dermatologist can remove brown spots from a patient's skin with a chemical peel. This procedure will help the skin's top layers flake off so that the brown spots disappear.

Step 5

Watch brown spots for rapid growth or development of irregular edges. These changes may be a sign of cancer. In that case, a biopsy must be done on the brown spot to determine if cancer if present.

Step 6

Wear a hat regularly when outside to protect delicate facial skin from harsh sunlight.

Step 7

Avoid suntanning. It is especially important to avoid direct sunlight during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Strong sunlight is very damaging to the skin; it will increase the number of brown spots.

Step 8

Prevent more brown spots from developing by using sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15 every day. Pick a sunscreen that is water resistant and labeled broad spectrum. Regular use of sunscreen prevents the skin from further damage associated with excess sunlight and aging.
