How to Treat Blackheads in Kids
Blackheads are formed by dead skin cells, sebum (or oil) and bacteria that clog the skin's pores. Once the clog is exposed to the air outside of your body, it changes color to black or brown. Blackheads are more common in children who are entering puberty due to the rise of hormone levels from the androgen glands located on top of the kidneys. These glands produce a male sex hormone in both boys and girls, which raises the amount of sebum produced in the skin and therefore leads to a higher occurence of blocked pores.
Wash your face daily using a gentle oil-free cleanser. Do not scrub the skin, as this can cause irritation and lead to greater occurence of blackheads. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel.
Apply an over-the-counter gel or lotion containing 5 percent to 10 percent benzoyl peroxide twice daily. Do this after you have cleansed and dried your face for the medication to reach the pores.
Visit your dermatologist. A dermatologist will consider your child's age and can prescribe topical antibiotics or oral medication to treat blackheads that will not heal with over-the-counter treatment.
Avoid the use of oil-based makeup. This will worsen blackheads and clog other pores, making blackhead acne spread.
Avoid wearing hats or bandanas that cover the forehead or any other part of the face. This will prevent healing of the blackhead and cause them to spread by introducing more bacteria to the pores.
