Overview

Acne is a common problem, which in most cases clears up on its own or is easily treated with an over-the-counter product such as salicylic acid. Unfortunately, acne does have the propensity to become more serious as bacteria builds up in the acne lesion and inflammation sets in. Eventually this inflammation can lead to the formation of an acne nodule, which, if left untreated, can burst and cause acne scar tissue.

Step 1

Use the oral prescription isotretinoin. One of the first prescription lines of treatment for any form of acne is isotretinoin. A form of retinoid, this medication is taken orally, and is the only medication capable of addressing all causes of acne, including acne nodules. Isotretinoin works by addressing irregular skin cell shedding, inflammation, bacteria buildup and sebum oil production, all factors of nodule formation.

Step 2

Take a course of oral antibiotics. To get inflammation under control in an acne nodule, the colonies of P. acnes bacteria must be reduced. This can be done through oral or topical antibiotic use, such as erythromycin, clindamycin and sodium sulfacetamide. Some antibiotics, such as erythromycin, can also benefit acne nodules by reducing inflammation if used topically.

Step 3

Have corticosteroids injected into the acne nodule. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications that can quickly reduce inflammation as well as pressure built up behind the acne lesion. Corticosteroids can be injected for quick-acting effects, or can also be used as a topical medication.

Step 4

Have the nodule surgically drained or excised. For serious acne nodules that have not responded to other treatment methods, your doctor may need to perform surgical draining or excision to prevent scarring. Surgical draining involves physically draining pus from the acne nodule, while excision involves removing the nodule from the skin.
