Taking care of your skin and implementing a daily skin care regimen can help prevent a host of problems, ranging from acne or oily patches to dry, flaky skin. Good skin care does not have to be expensive or difficult, but you will need to be diligent and consistent to get the best results. Maintaining a morning and nighttime skin care routine and using certain products on a weekly basis will leave your skin feeling clean, healthy and free of many common and avoidable problems.

Step 1

Clean your skin with a cleanser appropriate for your skin type. This is a vital part of any morning and evening skin care regimen. Be sure to use a gentle cleanser that is specifically formulated for your skin type. If you have dry skin, avoid products containing alcohol or other drying ingredients that will strip your skin of moisture. Likewise, if your skin is oily, make sure to use products labeled oil-free or noncomedogenic. Cleanse your skin both in the morning and in the evening, and if you use waterproof mascara or other waterproof makeup products, be sure to use an oil-free makeup remover before cleansing. Cleansing your skin removes dirt and impurities, prevents blackheads and breakouts, and can help to control excessive oil or a greasy appearance.

Step 2

Exfoliate regularly with a facial scrub. The Marie Claire magazine website recommends exfoliating two to three times per week with a gentle scrub that contains round beads. On days that you exfoliate, you can replace the cleanser with the exfoliater, so as not to cause excessive dryness or over-stimulation of the sebaceous glands, which may result in overproduction of oil and lead to breakouts. Exfoliation is a commonly overlooked step in skin care, which can help to prevent dry, flaky skin and remove dead skin cells, resulting in a brighter, healthier-looking complexion.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin daily, even if you have oily skin. The Allure magazine website claims that many common skin complaints, such as breakouts and irritation, are caused by using the wrong moisturizer. If you have very dry skin, you may want to consider using a night cream specifically formulated to combat dryness, and use a lighter moisturizer containing glycerin to be used under makeup during the day. For very oily skin, try using a light moisturizer containing an anti-acne ingredient, such as salicylic acid. All skin types should be sure to use a moisturizer that contains sunscreen, to prevent UV damage and signs of aging.

Step 4

Include a weekly facial treatment, such as a mask or a peel, in your skin care routine. Using a mud or clay mask once a week is great for those with oily or acne-prone skin. Likewise, those with sensitive or dry skin should use a hydrating mask containing glycerin. In her book, "Natural Beauty at Home," Janet Cox provides a recipe for a homemade facial mask for those with dry skin using a mashed avocado. Allow the mask to sit for 15 minutes before washing off. If you have oily skin, Cox suggests that using fresh mashed tomatoes as a weekly mask can help to eliminate blackheads and remove dead skin cells.
