How to Take Care of Sensitive Acne Skin

Overview

Taking care of acne-prone skin that is also sensitive can be difficult. Many acne-fighting products on the market use ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which can be harsh and damaging to sensitive skin. Instead, choose other options that will leave you healthy inside and out and help keep your skin looking clear for the long term.

Step 1

Wash twice a day with a mild, hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic cleanser. Hypoallergenic means that the ingredients in a product are known to cause fewer allergies in users. It doesn't mean that it won't irritate your individual skin; it just means it's less likely to. Noncomedogenic means that it won't clog your pores, which is especially important for acne-prone skin. A product will usually be labeled with these terms if it meets the standards.

Step 2

Use a gentle, all-natural toner, such as witch hazel, to clarify skin and remove excess oil and impurities. Pour a little on a cotton ball and gently wipe over the face. Do not rub, as this will cause irritation. You can also use a liquid exfoliant in the same way to remove the top layer of dead skin cells and clear the pores. People with acne-prone, sensitive skin should not use scrubs, as they can be too harsh and cause irritation.

Step 3

Moisturize daily with a light, oil-free, noncomedogenic moisturizer. If you have acne, you want to avoid using any product with excess oil in it, as it may block the pores and lead to more breakouts. Dry skin can cause breakouts just as much as oily skin, so make sure to keep the skin well hydrated.

Step 4

Use oil-free, hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic makeup that will not clog pores. Mineral makeup may be a good choice for people with sensitive skin, as many brands are specially formulated not to irritate the skin or clog pores.
