How to Suppress Acne-Causing Hormones
Acne has many causes, including environmental factors and hormones. Hormone fluctuations happen in many stages of life, including during puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Men tend to have these fluctuations during puberty, when testosterone increases, and in the golden years as testosterone declines. Suppressing certain hormonal imbalances can help with acne breakouts and controlling oil production in the skin.
Reduce your intake of dairy products. The hormones in milk and cheeses can add to already existent hormone fluctuations in your body, thereby increasing oil production and enlarging pores.
Take birth control pills. Women suffering acne due to hormones can calm fluctuations and imbalances by taking progesterone, a hormone commonly found in birth control pills. Consult your gynecologist to determine if this method is safe for you.
Eat a well-balanced diet. Your hormones are correlated to your vitamin and mineral intake, and balancing them can be done by following the food pyramid and taking in Vitamin E, which contributes to skin, hair and nail health.
Drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Water can keep hormones at a normal, constant level and flush out toxins that could cause hormonal fluctuations. Stay away from foods high in sugar, cholesterol and those with a high sodium content.
Avoid stress. Stress causes the brain to release chemicals, thereby raising hormone levels as a defense mechanism. These hormone fluctuations can cause acne anywhere, not just on your face.
Exercise two to three times a week. Exercise keeps hormone levels evened out and can also help shed extra pounds, which can also raise and lower hormone levels in both men and women.
