How to Stop Acne Problems How to Stop Acne Problems

No one likes dealing with acne, but it's a common problem, nevertheless. Both teenagers and adults suffer from acne problems. For most, a simple over-the-counter solution will cure acne and allow them to enjoy clear skin. But those with persistent acne problems may need to use stronger medications or even undergo dermatological procedures to put a stop to their acne and prevent scarring.

Step 1

Use salicylic acid. Salicylic acid works by breaking down keratin, a large component of dead skin cells, which are washed away much more quickly, preventing the pores from getting clogged. This results in clearer skin over time. Salicylic acid is available in cream, gel and cleanser form.

Step 2

Use benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is available over the counter and by prescription in varying concentrations. It kills bacteria and reduces oil production, making acne less likely to develop on your skin. It can be quite drying to the skin, so whether you use a benzoyl peroxide-based cleanser or lotion, follow up with an oil-free moisturizer.

Step 3

Take oral medication. Oral antibiotics like erythromycin is effective at killing acne bacteria and giving your skin a chance to heal. Drugs like isotretinoin or Accutane are also effective by shrinking the oil glands and killing acne bacteria. Be sure to take these drugs exactly as directed by your dermatologist to prevent unwanted side effects.

Step 4

Undergo laser treatments. During this procedure, a dermatologist targets a laser at your acne that damages the oil glands, resulting in less oil production. Over time, this will slow down your breakouts and make your skin clearer. Several sessions are usually needed to obtain desirable results.
