Overview

Acne is the result of overactive sebaceous glands in the skin that produce too much oil. This can block the pores and cause the eruption of inflamed pustules or even scarring. Acne breakouts are most common during adolescence and may require medical treatment in severe cases. You can reduce the chances of an acne breakout by performing skin maintenance and using acne medication.

Step 1

Apply acne medication to the effected skin. The active ingredient in acne medication is typically benzoyl peroxide. This medication introduces oxygen into the skin pores which inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause acne. Topical acne medication may be in the form of creams, lotions and oils.

Step 2

Use astringents with caution. You should only use medications that dry the skin if your skin is especially oily. Even then, you should apply the astringent to the oily area.

Step 3

Shave sparingly to avoid acne breakouts. Soak your beard in warm water to soften it and apply a shaving gel specifically made for sensitive skin. Make a single pass over each area with a new razor in the direction of the hair's growth. Use only slight pressure so that you don't nick any blemishes.

Step 4

Minimize your exposure to the sun. Acne medication frequently makes your skin more likely to sunburn. While sunburn can darken your skin and minimize the appearance of any blemishes, this is only a temporary condition. The sun can also cause other skin problems and may increase your risk of skin cancer.

Step 5

Cleanse your skin daily. Wash your skin at least twice each day with a mild soap to prevent acne breakouts. Rinse your skin with water to remove the soap from your skin. Avoid squeezing or popping blemishes caused by acne. This greatly increases the chance that a blemish will develop into a scar.
