Your skin contains tiny pores that contain a hair follicle and oil gland that secretes skin-softening oil to your skin's surface, according to Mother Nature, a health resource website dedicated to natural health treatments. These pores can vary in size from person to person. On some faces, pores are so small they cannot be seen---creating the appearance of smooth, flawless skin. On others, however, pores are larger and highly visible to the naked eye---especially those around the nose where oil glands are concentrated. These open pores may make your skin oilier and make your skin look less smooth.

Step 1

Wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser that removes excess dirt and oils. Having too much oil on the skin contributes to open pores by collecting around the pores and making them appear larger, according to Dr. Audrey Kunin, a dermatologist writing on the skincare website DERMA Doctor.

Step 2

Apply a skin cream that contains alpha hydroxy acids, according to Dr. Mary Stone, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Iowa who was interviewed on Mother Nature. Examples of these acids include glycolic, lactic and other fruit acids that help to remove dead skin cells that linger around your pores, making them appear open.

Step 3

Apply a pore minimizer after waiting several minutes for your skin cream to absorb into the skin. A pore minimizer acts like a putty to open pores---filling the holes and making the skin appear more smooth and even, according to Mother Nature. Apply a small amount to any areas that have open pores and allow time to soak in before applying makeup.

Step 4

Utilize an exfoliating facial scrub once per week to encourage the loosening of dead skin cells that are naturally shed by your skin, according to Daily Glow. These scrubs can be purchased at most drugstores or discount superstores. Lightly moisten the face, then apply to the skin using a circular motion. Rinse away with warm water.
