Pores provide oil to your skin, keeping it soft and hydrated. However, your pores can clog with oils, become infected and appear dilated, causing them to seem larger. In addition, age and genetics contribute to your large pore size, as do sun damage, poor skin care and blackheads. Although you cannot totally reverse the damage to your pores, several treatments can help shrink and repair them.

Step 1

Begin a daily skin care regimen with products developed for your skin type. Wash your face with cleanser in the mornings and evenings before you go to bed. Use an astringent toner to remove any dirt, make-up and soap residue left on your face. Use a moisturizer after cleansing and toning to restore the moisture and pH balance of your skin that cleansing and toning strips.

Step 2

Exfoliate once or twice a week with products that include aluminum oxide crystals, peptide resurfacing crystals or any other ingredients, such as natural sands, sugar, salt or crushed nut and wood agents. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Dead skin cells can clog your pores and increase the size of your pores.

Step 3

Apply a facial mask once or twice a week on the days you do not exfoliate. A mask helps close your pores and tighten your skin, giving your pores a smaller appearance.

Step 4

Visit a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or aesthetician for specialized treatments. Laser resurfacing removes damaged skin and allows younger skin to replace and correct minor flaws, such as enlarged pores. Chemical peels use acids to remove several layers of damage surface skin, repairing the appearance of large pores. Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates your skin and abrades the surface to shrink the appearance of large pores and remove minor acne damage.
