Overview

If you suffer from more moderate-to-severe acne, it's possible to develop what is known as acne scars. Treatments to remove these types of scars rely heavily on cosmetic procedures that work on the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. However, acne scars are often unique to the individual, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, which means that the most effective method of removing scars isn't the same across the board. What works for one person may not work for you, so talk to a dermatologist before choosing a method of scar removal.

Step 1

Consider fillers to remove acne scarring. Acne scars that are sunken or deep-set into the skin respond favorably to soft tissue fillers. According to the Mayo Clinic, collagen or fat is injected directly under the scars to fill them in. The amount of filler needed is based on the size and depth of the acne scarring. Results can last upward of four months. After this time, additional injections are needed to smooth out the skin.

Step 2

Try microdermabrasion on pimple scarring. If the scarring is superficial, meaning it's isolated to the surface, microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of the skin. In this cosmetic procedure, pimple scars are exposed to fine crystals that remove the epidermal layer of the skin. Healing brings about a new layer of skin that often matches the rest of your complexion.

Step 3

Opt for dermabrasion on acne scars. The Academy of Dermatology and the Mayo Clinic recommend this type of skin resurfacing for more severe acne scars. A wire brush is used to sand away the epidermal layer of the skin. When the skin heals, you're often left with more even skin, removing most traces of the acne scars.

Step 4

Use laser resurfacing to remove pimple scars. According to the Cleveland Clinic, laser resurfacing can improve the appearance of both raised and flat acne scarring. It works by removing the surface layer of the skin while the dermis absorbs the laser energy, raising the temperature of this tissue. This triggers the production of collagen, which can help to fill in sunken or deep-set pimple scars.

Step 5

Have scar revision surgery to remove the scar. Scar revision is a surgical procedure that removes the scarred tissue and replaces it with healthy skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. Much like dermabrasion, this is usually reserved for severe scars.
