Acne is a common skin disorder that causes pimples, such as whiteheads, blackheads and other unsightly lesions or blemishes. Although it is not a serious condition, it often causes severe emotional distress for acne sufferers. The development of this skin disease is predominantly genetic and hormonal, but topical treatments help reduce acne symptoms like inflammation or pore-clogging debris.

Unlike commercial products, which tend to contain chemicals that can dry out the skin and exacerbate acne, using natural ingredients as part of your skin care regimen may help reduce the appearance of pimples. Herbal remedies are popular alternatives to over-the-counter beauty products, but there is little scientific data to support their effects on acne. Consult your dermatologist before using beginning a new skin program.

Sweet Daily Scrub

Step 1

Mix 3 tbsp. organic dark brown sugar with 8 drops of peppermint oil. Organic dark brown sugar is naturally antibacterial and retains glycolic acid, which helps exfoliate and slough away dead skin cells or other debris, states the Oasis Advanced Wellness website.

Alternately, peppermint oil is antimicrobial as well as soothing due to the presence of menthol, states the Drug Information website. This helps quell inflamed skin associated with acne while warding off infection. There still, however, lacks scientific data to support its effect on acne.

Step 2

Apply the scrub in upward strokes to lift away impurities and debris that can clog pores. Avoid the sensitive areas near the eyes and mouth.

Step 3

Rinse with warm water. This scrub is safe to use daily, generally once in the morning and once before bed. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that people with acne-prone oily skin wash their face up to three times a day.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Cucumber Toner

Step 1

Combine 1/4 cup distilled water and 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar in a glass jar. Distilled water contains no trace impurities that are often found in tap water. Apple cider vinegar restores the pH balance of the skin while naturally exfoliating and brightening the skin due to the presence of alpha hydroxy acids, according to the RN Guide to Skin Care website.

Step 2

Grate the cucumber into a bowl and then strain the liquid into the water and apple cider vinegar jar. Cucumber helps tighten and reduce enlarged pores as well as minimize scarring, purports the Disabled World website.

Step 3

Shake the glass jar to evenly distribute the ingredients. Refrigerate the toner for approximately 2 hours or until cool.

Step 4

Soak a couple of cotton pads or balls in the toner. Apply to the face in circular motions to trap any dirt or debris on the skin’s surface. Use this toner daily following your cleanser. Do not rinse.
