How to Remove Enlarged Pores How to Remove Enlarged Pores

Overview

It's impossible to remove enlarged pores. Pores cover your body. They allow protective skin oils to reach the surface of your skin and also allow hair growth. However, as blackheads and debris clog your pores, your pores begin to stretch and appear enlarged. As you approach your mid to late 20s, you begin losing elasticity in your skin, which causes pores to remain stretched beyond their natural state even after the pore is unclogged. You can't change the size of these pores, but you can reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.

Reducing Enlarged Pores

Step 1

Wash your face with a gentle acne-targeting facial cleanser once when you wake up and once before going to bed. Going to bed with dirt, excess oil, make-up or other types of debris can clog your pores and stretch their size. The cleanser you use should be fragrance-free, oil-free and contain the ingredient salicylic acid.

Step 2

Apply an oil-free or combination targeting moisturizer that contains a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply this moisturizer frequently throughout the day. You can apply sunscreen and moisturizer separately, but this increases the amount of products on your face, which increases your risk of clogging your pores. According to DermaDoctor, sun damage is often the culprit of the appearance of large pores.

Step 3

Exfoliate your skin with a facial scrub twice per week to remove dead skin cells. The dead skin cells can make the pores appear larger because of the excess debris surrounding their opening. Once dead skin is removed, new skin is able to become exposed, which appears smoother and healthier.

Step 4

Get a chemical peel from a dermatologist. A chemical peel can remove more epidermal layers than an over-the-counter facial scrub. According to the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons, phenol, trichloroacetic acid and alphahydroxy acids are often used for a chemical peel. Although the pore will remain enlarged, the appearance will be drastically reduced.
