Overview

According to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual," some amount of blackheads and clogged pores are unpreventable and are caused by routine situations and environmental factors, including dust and sweating. However, these blemishes can be easily cleared from the skin of most people. If you take the appropriate steps to care for your skin and do not see an improvement in your blackheads and clogged pores, a visit to a dermatologist may be in order.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin each morning and evening, as well as after activity that causes you to sweat excessively, such as working out. Use a cleanser with salicylic acid, because according to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," it causes cell turnover, increasing the number of new, healthy skin cells and removing dead cells that could create clogged pores.

Step 2

Apply tea tree oil to your skin with a cotton ball after washing off the cleanser. Tea tree oil is a natural toner that helps to balance the oil levels of the skin, according to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," reducing the excess oil that would otherwise clog pores and form blackheads.

Step 3

Exfoliate your skin twice a week with a facial scrub. Exfoliation gently removes dead cells from the skin's surface, preventing these dead skin cells from clogging the pores, according to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice."

Step 4

Use water-based make-up as opposed to oil-based make-up. Though oil-based make-up is inexpensive and commonly found in drug stores, according to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," it can clog skin's pores and create blackheads. Water-based make-up is healthier for the skin.
