Overview

Acne can form on any part of the skin due to clogged pores and hair follicles. Clogged follicles on the scalp can cause scalp acne along with extreme irritation and inflammation. Getting rid of these clogged follicles is similar to clearing clogged pores on other parts of the body. Following a few guidelines can help relieve symptoms of scalp acne and clear up the skin for optimal scalp and hair health.

Step 1

Wash hair daily using a gentle massaging motion to coax bacteria and sebum out of the follicle. Using a dime sized dollop of gentle shampoo, massage into a lather, paying close attention to the scalp. Rinse with warm water. Warm and hot water have a drying effect on the scalp and will help dry excess oil.

Step 2

Use only non comedogenic hair styling and cleansing products. These products are proven through clinical testing not to clog follicles and do not cause acne. Avoid overuse of chemical hair products such as dyes and perms.

Step 3

Take 45 mg of zinc two times daily. According to the National Library of Medicine, zinc is a natural antioxidant that helps rid the body of toxins and bacteria that could cause skin inflammation and acne. It is also an essential nutrient that maintains healthy hair and scalp conditions.

Step 4

Use conditioners that are designed for oily hair. These conditioners moisturize the scalp without adding extra oils that could worsen clogs in the follicles. Moisture is needed for skin repair and light conditioners for oily hair safely provide this to acne scalp conditions.
