How to Remove Blackheads With Glycolic Acid How to Remove Blackheads With Glycolic Acid

Overview

Blackheads form when the sebaceous glands produce excess amounts of sebum. This oil combines with dead skin cells and debris to form a soft plug clogging up the pore. The tip of this oil's mixture oxidizes and turns blackish in color, becoming a blackhead. Glycolic acid, a member of the alphahydroxy acid family, derives from fruits and forms a component of chemical peels. Glycolic acid peels sold over-the-counter product can be found at drugstores and are often much milder in strength than those used in medical clinics.

Step 1

Cut a lemon in half, squeeze the juice into a dish containing rosewater and mix.

Step 2

Dab a cotton ball in the lemon and rosewater solution and apply to the blackhead area generously. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing to prep the skin by removing surface bacteria and oil.

Step 3

Steam your face over a bowl of hot water for five to 10 minutes. This will help loosen the soft blackhead plugs in the pores and make them easier to extract.

Step 4

Apply a glycolic acid gel peel mask to break down the dead skin cells stuck to the surface. Pour the gel onto a gauze pad and apply to the blackhead area. Leave for 10 minutes until it dries completely.

Step 5

Moisturize with an over-the-counter product containing a high SPF to protect the skin from photosensitivity as a result of glycolic acid.
