Overview

Seeing blackheads on your face can cause you to be self-conscious about your skin's appearance. Blackheads are also called open comedones. They are caused by a combination of bacteria, dead skin cells and oil that clog the hair follicle. Blackheads can affect areas on your face and back. Adopt the proper skin care regimen to help minimize the appearance of blackheads. Several treatments options, like topical creams and medications, are available to help erase blackheads quickly.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin with a gentle facial wash. Do not use harsh soaps and scrubs that can irritate the skin and make blemishes appear worse. Wet your skin, and massage a gentle cleanser onto the affected areas. Rinse thoroughly, and pat skin dry.

Step 2

Apply an over-the-counter treatment to areas with blackheads. Use treatment creams and lotions with ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol and lactic acid as the active ingredients. Dab a thin layer of treatment cream on your skin twice per day to dry up excess oil and increase new skin cell production, which will lead to clearer skin.

Step 3

Make an appointment to visit your dermatologist and discuss prescription strength creams. Ask about a prescription for stronger treatments that contain ingredients like tazarotene, tretinoin, adalpalene. If your doctor prescribes a stronger cream, apply it to affected areas twice a day. Stop using it if you experience irritation or redness.

Step 4

Use cosmetics, sunscreens and hair styling products that are water based, noncomedogenic or oil-free. Do not use products that can clog pores and worsen blackheads.

Step 5

Ask your dermatologist about an oral prescription if blackheads don't respond to topical treatments. Take an antibiotic that includes ingredients like doxycycline, minocycline and tetracycline to help kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.

Step 6

Wash your hands frequently to prevent the transfer of bacteria. Avoid touching your face.
