Blackheads are a precursor to pimples, if they're not treated properly. Known as open comedones, blackheads form in pores clogged with dead skin cells and oil, but not yet infected with bacteria, as Medical News Today explains. Bacterial infection is what gives way to inflammation and more advance acne formations. Frequently found on the nose, blackheads often form when the skin produces too much sebum and it isn't exfoliated adequately, either by the body's natural skin cell-shedding process or manually. Blackheads can be removed quickly at home, but proper technique is important for preventing skin irritation, infection or scarring.

Step 1

Clean the skin where you have blackheads with an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide cleansing bar or liquid. Follow the package directions for proper use. This prepares the skin for blackhead removal in several ways. It disinfects the area, exfoliates the skin and begins to break down the pore's clog, according to

Step 2

Boil enough water to fill a large bowl. Once it comes to a boil, pour it in the bowl and set it on a table.

Step 3

Hold your affected skin in the steam rising from the bowl. If your blackheads are on your face, drape a towel over the back of your head to guide and contain the steam. Steaming expands the pores and softens the blackheads, facilitating painless extraction, notes Medical News Today.

Step 4

Rub down your comedone extractor with gauze or a clean cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol to disinfect it.

Step 5

Position the loop at the end of your comedone extractor around a blackhead. Press down gently, forcing the blackhead up from the pore. Wipe the excretion off your skin and the comedone extractor with a clean towel.

Step 6

Wipe down the comedone extractor with more rubbing alcohol to disinfect it before pressing it into your skin again. Repeat this extraction and disinfection process until you have removed all your blackheads.

Step 7

Wash your face with warm water and a mild soap. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel.
