Overview

Acne breakouts are characterized by the appearance of papules, pustules, nodules and cysts on your skin. Acne and pimples can happen anywhere on your body, but most often occur on your face. In order to effectively treat and eliminate acne breakouts, it is important to wash your skin gently using a sensitive-skin soap, medicate your skin properly using a low-concentration benzoyl peroxide cream and hydrate your skin regularly to prevent it from becoming irritated.

Step 1

Cleanse your face using a soap designed for sensitive skin. Most regular soaps contain chemical ingredients that can cause irritation and inflammation on your skin. Using a regular soap on skin affected by acne can exacerbate the problem. Instead, use a soap formulated for sensitive skin to effectively clean your skin without irritating it. Wet your face and lather up your skin well. Do not scrub your skin, but simply spread the lather around, then rinse the lather off with water. Cleanse your skin in this manner two times per day.

Step 2

Medicate your face properly by using a low-concentration benzoyl peroxide cream. Benzoyl peroxide creams that are over 2.5% can burn your skin, causing it to peel, turn red and itch. To clear acne and pimples without seriously irritating your skin, use only the lowest-strength benzoyl peroxide cream, which will eliminate acne without damaging your face. Spread a pea-size amount of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream onto your skin. Use a gentle touch to avoid rubbing in the cream too aggressively. Continue to spread the cream until it has been completely absorbed into your skin. Medicate your skin in this manner twice per day.

Step 3

Hydrate your face by applying an oil-free lotion. When using a benzoyl peroxide cream, it is important to follow it with an oil-free lotion, which will keep your skin soft and supple without clogging your pores with oils or additives. Avoiding a moisturizing lotion when using a benzoyl peroxide cream will lead to overly dry skin and irritation, even when using the lowest-strength benzoyl peroxide cream. Smooth a dime-size amount of oil-free facial lotion on your skin, gently massaging it in until it has been absorbed. Hydrate your skin in this manner two times per day.
