How to Relieve Itchy Skin
During the winter months, you are prone to dry skin that may feel itchy. This is due to the lack of humidity in the air from indoor heating systems. Other causes of itchy skin include allergic reactions, adverse drug reactions, pregnancy, celiac disease and other medical conditions. Speak to your doctor if you suspect a medical condition is causing the itchy skin. Treating the underlying cause is likely to relieve the itchy skin.
Soak in an oatmeal bath. Fill a tub with cool water and sprinkle a generous amount of uncooked and unflavored oatmeal to the water. Soak in the water for at least 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.
Wash with a non-drying body cleanser. Soaps and body washes with fragrances can dry out the skin and worsen itchiness.
Use a skin moisturizer after you have bathed. If you use the moisturizer while you are still wet, it traps the water on the surface of your skin. Choose a body moisturizer that is labeled hypoallergenic.
Apply a small amount of over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to the itchy areas of the skin. Use no more than twice daily. Continue use for five to 15 days to relieve itchiness.
Relieve itching by placing cold compress bandages on the area of skin that is itchy. Wet dressings can be applied to stop itching and prevent you from scratching.
Dress in lightweight cotton clothing that will not irritate the skin. Avoid putting on any jewelry, perfumes, and skincare products that may cause the itching to worsen.
