Acne is a common skin condition that causes uncomfortable and unsightly blemishes on the face. These blemishes are a frustrating and embarrassing skin issue for many people. Women may notice that acne breakouts occur a few days before their menstrual cycle. This is because hormones may be a trigger for acne in some women, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fortunately, there are treatment options that regulate hormones and reduce the occurrence of breakouts. Using these treatments in conjunction with topical treatments can get hormonal acne under control.

Step 1

Write down when acne occurs. Acne caused by hormones typically occurs a few days before the menstrual cycle starts. If your acne always occurs during this time, it may be triggered by hormone changes due to your menstrual cycle.

Step 2

Schedule an appointment with your physician. Discuss your acne pattern with the doctor based on your acne log. Oral contraceptives may be effective in women with hormonal acne. A pill that contains a combination of norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol is most effective, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 3

Use an acne cleanser on the face daily. Once your doctor prescribes an oral contraceptive, start using an over-the-counter acne cleaner twice daily. Products with sulfur, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide are most effective, according to the Mayo Clinic. Skin may become dry or irritated; however, side effects usually taper off after a month of use.

Step 4

Discuss prescription topical treatments with your doctor. Use oral contraceptives and topical treatments to get control of acne quicker. Treatments such as adapalene and tretinoin are prescription lotions for acne. Since these treatments are also used for wrinkles, your doctor may need to write a note to your health insurance company indicating that the medications will be used to treat acne to be covered.

Step 5

Protect your skin from the sun. Many people notice that acne improves in response to exposure to the sun; however, this is temporary. Sun exposure causes the skin becomes overly dry and oil glands start producing additional oil, clogging pores. Use an oil-free sunscreen and stay out of the sun when possible.
