Overview

Everyone has oil glands on their faces. Also called sebaceous glands, they help to provide your skin with moisture. However, if overactive, your oil glands can leave your skin looking shiny and oily all the time, with your pores appearing large and open. Luckily, there are ways to reduce the size of oil glands on the face so that your pores will look smaller.

Step 1

Wash your face each morning and night using a gentle cleanser. It should remove oil, dirt, dead skin cells and makeup. The more dead skin cells and impurities you remove from your face, the fewer things the oil has to hold onto and the smaller your pores will look.

Step 2

Use an exfoliant with alpha hydroxy acids in it. This will help slough off dead skin cells, unclog your pores and help them shrink, which means less oil on your face, less shine and fewer blemishes.

Step 3

Use a product that contains tretinoin. Though it's usually only available by prescription, tretinoin can shrink your pores and oil glands over time with continual use. Apply the topical to your face each night and you should notice improved skin texture and smaller pores. Tretinoin products make you more sensitive to sunlight, so use caution and wear a sunscreen when venturing outdoors.

Step 4

Avoid liquid foundations that are oil-based or heavy. These will settle in your pores and encourage further oil production. Use powder or powder cream foundations instead. They won't clog your pores as easily and help to minimize the look of pores and shine.
