How to Reduce the Effects of Acne Scars How to Reduce the Effects of Acne Scars

Acne scars are caused by acne pustules and cysts that become inflamed and irritated, which leave behind skin discolorations. Acne scars are often tougher and drier than the skin surrounding them, which makes completely eliminating acne scarring difficult. Luckily, you can try a home remedy to reduce the appearance of acne discolorations. This regimen involves softening your skin with a noncomedogenic oil, exfoliating your skin with a natural scrub and rebuilding new skin cells by applying a substance high in vitamin C.

Step 1

Pour 1 tsp. of olive oil into your hands, then spread the oil onto your face. Use your fingers to massage the oil into your skin, focusing on the areas that have the most scarring. After three minutes, spread an additional teaspoon of olive oil onto your skin, and let it sit for five minutes. While the oil is soaking into your skin, fill a bowl with nearly boiling water. Lean over the bowl, and drape a towel over your head. This will force the steam to envelop your skin, further softening the area. Steam your face for five minutes, then wipe off the oil with a wet washcloth. Repeat up to three times a week.

Step 2

Pour 1 tbsp. of baking soda into a bowl, and stir 1 tsp. of water into it. Smooth the baking soda mixture onto your skin, and gently massage it around using small, circular movements with your fingers. Avoid scrubbing your skin vigorously, which can damage your skin. Massage for two minutes, then rinse off your skin with warm water. Repeat up to three times a week to remove dead and discolored skin cells.

Step 3

Soak five cotton pads with lemon juice, and place them on your skin. Place two on your forehead, one on your chin and one one each cheek. Leave the cotton pads on your skin for at least 10 minutes, then remove them to let your skin dry. Repeat up to three times a day to rebuild skin cells, which will help maintain a more balanced complexion.
