How to Reduce Redness & Inflammation From Acne

Overview

An estimated 85 to 90 percent of adolescents suffer from acne vulgaris, according to the McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Other types of acne are caused by chemical exposure called chemical acne; exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbon called chloracne; and tropical acne caused by humid and hot conditions, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. To prevent redness and inflammation in acne lesions, you must treat the infection and keep your skin cleansed. Always consult your dermatologist before applying any type of over-the-counter medication on your skin.

Step 1

Use a headband to pull all your hair away from your face. It is important to let your skin breathe as this will dry out any lesions and promote your skin to scab and heal itself.

Step 2

Moisten your skin with warm water, and wash it using a gentle cleanser that contains lavender or tea tree essential oil. According to acupuncturist David Crow in his book "The Pharmacy of Flowers," lavender has strong antifungal properties and tea tree oil has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that can help fight infection in your skin and promote healing.

Step 3

Rinse with warm water, and pat dry using a soft towel. Avoid rubbing your skin with your towel as this may irritate your acne lesions.

Step 4

Apply a thin layer of your mud mask, and wait for it to dry. You can buy mud masks at your local health food store. They help replenish your skin with minerals as they cleanse out your pores.

Step 5

Rinse using warm water. Pat dry with your soft towel again.

Step 6

Moisten a cotton ball with an astringent toner, such as witch hazel, to help tone and close your pores to prevent debris from contaminating your skin.

Step 7

Apply a non-greasy moisturizing cream that also contains lavender essential oil. This will help regulate your skin's elasticity and prevent dryness that may cause even more acne as your skin tries to counterbalance it by producing more sebum.

Step 8

Use an over-the-counter topical antibiotic, such as clindamycin and erythromycin, intended to treat inflammation on acne lesions specifically, if your infections are not improving with the use of the natural essential oils.

Step 9

Repeat each step every morning and night until the redness and inflammation gets better and as long as you are experiencing acne outbreaks.
