Overview

Acne is a skin condition that is caused by blocked, inflamed and irritated pores. Papules and pustules are the types of acne blemishes that cause redness during an acne breakout. Treating the inflammation associated with the acne breakout will help to control the redness. If left untreated, acne can cause scarring, depression and anxiety, notes the American Academy of Dermatology.

Step 1

Place cool compresses on the blemishes to reduce the inflammation. Be sure the compress is cool and not cold. A cold compress can rupture blood vessels and make the redness worse.

Step 2

Stay cool. Heat can make your skin turn red. Additionally, sweat on the acne blemishes will irritate them, notes MedlinePlus. This will worsen the redness. If you do sweat, rinse the area off as soon as possible to minimize irritation.

Step 3

Reduce the frequency with which you apply anti-acne medications. Redness, dry skin and flaking are all side effects of these medications, according to MayoClinic.com. If you are using more than one anti-acne product, try using only one. However, if your medications are prescriptions, contact your doctor before making any adjustments in how you use them.

Step 4

Apply water-based or non-comedogenic foundation or concealer to the blemishes to cover redness, suggests the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Do this until the blemishes heal.
