How to Reduce Oil Production in the Face

How to Reduce Oil Production in the Face

Overview

When an overproduction of oil occurs in the face, it can cause acne. According to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, acne is a skin disorder caused by inflammation in the hair follicles. Hair follicles clog when dead skin cells combine with oil. This plug can turn into a blackhead, whitehead or other form of acne. To avoid having oil clog up pores, preventative measures can be taken. If you do not see any reduction of oil or acne after several months, contact your local dermatologist.

Step 1

Wash your face each day with a mild cleanser for skin that is prone to oil production. Gentle washing will suffice, do not wash your skin too much, which can cause irritation.

Step 2

Exfoliate your skin with a facial scrub. This helps remove the dead skin cells that can build up and will help keep follicles clear of excess oil. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation says to exfoliate once or twice a week.

Step 3

Use a benzoyl peroxide gel daily on skin where needed. The gel can help kill bacteria and and unplug oil within your skin.

Step 4

Make a tea with the herbs red clover, nettles and echinacea. Pack the herbs in a tea ball and bring some water to a boil in a kettle. Let the herbs steep for five to 10 minutes. Tom Monte writes in "The Complete Guide to Natural Healing" that these herbs help prevent oil from forming.
