Overview

Acne vulgaris, or acne, is a common skin problem affecting millions of individuals of all ethnic groups and ages. Acne commonly affects the sebaceous glands in your skin--located on your chest, back and face, where they are most common. When these sebaceous glands are infected by bacteria or overstimulated, acne is formed. Common causes of acne include genetics, bacterial infections, medications and blockage of skin pores. If left untreated, acne can cause psychological trauma due to the disfiguring appearance and scarring. Fortunately, there are treatments you can apply to eliminate body acne.

Step 1

Shower with lukewarm water every day, especially after sweating heavily or exercise. Showering will reduce acne by eliminating residues such as dirt, which can encourage the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

Step 2

Use a liquid body wash and a soft sponge to gently clean and exfoliate your skin. Using a soft sponge together with a high-quality body wash will eliminate residues that can encourage the growth of acne-causing bacteria. When purchasing a body wash make sure it contains salicylic and glycolic acids, since these chemicals can dissolve dull buildup and deep-clean your pores and follicles. Do not use a loofah sponge, since these can scrape and pop the acne and cause infection.

Step 3

Apply an over-the-counter acne product containing benzoyl peroxide after showering. Some over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products include:Benzaderm Gel, Proactive and other various store brand or generic benzoyl peroxide creams. Benzoyl peroxide works by killing the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts while reducing the skin inflammation and redness associated with acne. Make sure to read and follow the directions in the package before applying benzoyl peroxide to your skin.

Step 4

Consult a dermatologist if you have severe acne all over your body. You might need a stronger prescription medication to deal with severe acne. A dermatologist will look at your skin and prescribe an appropriate treatment and evaluate the effect of different medications on your acne.

Step 5

Apply sunblock to your body 30 minutes before going outdoors. Use a sunblock with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or above. Using sunblock during your acne treatments will prevent the darkening of the skin areas affected with acne.
