How to Reduce an Acne Hole
Acne can cause pits and saucer-shaped holes on the skin. These scars can stay with a person long after acne has faded. Acne scars cause stress and reduced self-confidence in many people. However, advances in technology and medicine provide many options for treating this type of scar, according to the American Association of Dermatology. After existing acne has been treated, a dermatologist can examine scars and recommend a procedure for your scarring.
Treat existing acne. Purchase over-the-counter acne products for mild acne. Select products with the active ingredients benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or sulfur. For moderate to severe acne, ask your doctor to prescribe oral medications, such as antibiotics or Accutane. Once acne is clear, a dermatologist can assist with acne scar holes.
Request an appointment with a dermatologist. Find a reputable dermatologist through the American Academy of Dermatology. The dermatologist will examine your skin and recommend treatment based on the severity of your scarring.
Select a treatment for scarring. There are several options available for depressed acne scars, including laser treatments, chemical peels and steroid injections. A doctor may also recommend a subcision treatment, where scar tissue is cut away from the skin to promote new skin growth.
Use dermabrasion treatment. If you select a subcision procedure, ask your dermatologist about dermabrasion treatment, which further enhances the procedure's results. A dermatologist uses a brush rotating at a fast speed to smooth the skin's appearance. This second procedure if often needed for acne hole scars.
Ask about pricing for acne scar removal. Laser treatments cost up to $6,000 per treatment, chemical peels cost $50 to $150 per session and steroid injections are up to $75 per injection. Subcision procedures cost up to $750. Most insurance companies don't cover scarring procedures, which makes pricing information important.
