How to Reduce Adult Acne
Acne is generally considered the burden of teenagers, but it can extend into adulthood, too. While the good news is those with adult acne often experience signs of aging at a slower rate, adults who wish to lessen the appearance of adult acne should take the following measures. Also, because adult acne often is the result of hormonal causes, your adult acne may require medical intervention as well.
Reduce the amount of stress in your life by engaging in stress-relieving behaviors, such as exercising, meditating, massage or any other activity you enjoy. Because stress is one of the chief contributing factors of adult acne, reducing your stress levels may help to reduce your acne.
Use a cleanser that contains salicylic acid, which can be purchased over the counter. This mild acid helps to unclog your pores as well as reduce the amount of dead skin cells on the face, giving your skin a fresher appearance.
Spot treat pimples with a benzoyl peroxide treatment with 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide or less, as any higher could be drying to the skin. Because benzoyl peroxide works to absorb oil contained in the pores, you may wish to use an oil-free moisturizer along with this in order to prevent any dryness that can occur. If you notice excessive or painful burning, drying or peeling, you may wish to discontinue use.
See a spa or dermatology professional for monthly microdermabrasion treatments. This therapy uses a specialized wand to gently abrade the skin, removing dry skin cells and revealing fresher skin underneath. Exfoliating the skin prevents buildup of dead skin cells that can clog the pores and cause breakouts.
Apply a retinoid treatment at night before going to bed. Retinoids are a concentrated form of vitamin A, and over-the-counter brands include Retin A. This treatment is best used at night as it can increase your risk of sunburn when applied during the day.
If you are a woman, ask your physician or dermatologist if you could benefit from taking birth control pills, which may help to keep your hormones in check and therefore reduce the incidence of acne.
