How to Prevent Premenstrual Acne and Pimples
Overview
Acne is a term used for the blockage and inflammation of skin pores caused by dead skin cells and trapped sebum, or oil. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, premenstrual acne flare-ups occur two to seven days before your period begins. You can prevent mild to moderate premenstrual acne by following a proper cleansing and oil-reducing routine, though more sever acne may require dermatological help.
Step 1
Cleanse your skin twice daily with a mild cleanser to remove excess oil and dead skin cells. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, washing more often, scrubbing or applying facial masks can actually irritate the skin, worsening existent acne.
Step 2
Apply a light oil-free moisturizer after cleansing to keep skin soft. According to MotherNature.com, some women suffer oily skin on the forehead and nose while the rest of the face remains dry.
Step 3
Apply oil-free cosmetics to prevent additional oil build up. Opt for cosmetics labeled "non-comedogenic" or "water-based," suggest the University of Maryland Medical Center. "Non-comedogenic" means that the product will not clog skin pores.
Step 4
Apply over-the-counter lotions containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to the face once daily, recommends the University of Maryland Medical Center. These lotions slough off dead skin while removing forming pore blockages.
Step 5
Consult with your doctor about adjustments to any birth control method, especially oral contraceptives. Your birth control dosage may need to be lowered or raised to balance out your estrogen and progesterone levels. According to MotherNature.com, adjusting contraceptive methods can help prevent acne.
