Overview

Acne occurring before or during menstruation is caused by a surge in the hormone levels in the body. These hormonal fluctuations can make it difficult to treat active acne breakouts. Luckily, there are steps you can take to ward off and prevent acne from forming on the skin. Although traditional acne treatments involve applying harsh chemical creams and toners, it is more effective to prevent menstrual acne by applying a few natural treatments.

Step 1

Flush out the pores with purgative oils to prevent impurities from infecting the pores, leading to breakouts. Skin oils will be more profuse during periods of hormonal fluctuations, and by keeping the pores clean, it will be easier to prevent infected acne from forming under the skin. In a small bowl, combine 1 tsp. of castor oil, 1 tsp. of olive oil, and 1/2 tsp. of rose essential oil. Spread the oils onto the skin and massage them in deeply using the fingers. After a few minutes, place a hot, wet washcloth onto the face, pressing it in. This will open up the pores to release the blockages. Once the cloth cools down, wipe off the oils and impurities. Use an oil cleanse twice per day.

Step 2

Prevent dead skin cells from trapping in skin oils by applying a natural daily facial exfoliant, such as baking soda. Removing dead skin cells from the face routinely will prevent acne from forming caused by oils becoming clogged in the skin. In a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water. Spread the baking soda mixture onto wet skin, and gently glide it around the skin using small circles. After a couple minutes, rinse off the skin well with warm water. Use an exfoliant three times per week.

Step 3

Prevent acne and tighten the skin by applying an antimicrobial facial toner. Tea tree oil is a natural antimicrobial oil that will kill off acne causing bacteria that may be forming on the skin around menstruation. Fill an empty spray bottle with 8 ounces of lemon juice and 10 drops of pure tea tree oil. Mix the substances well, then spray clean skin up to three times per day. Allow the toner to dry onto the skin.
