How to Prevent Hormonal Acne

Overview

Acne affects up to 17 million people in the United States, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Acne develops when excessive sebum clogs bores. Genetics, medications and hormonal fluctuations are all causes of acne. Treatments for acne include topical lotions, oral antibiotics and hormone therapy.

Step 1

Visit a doctor to obtain a prescription for hormonal birth control. Some women should avoid hormone birth control, including women over the age of 35, women who smoke and those who have a history of blood clots or endometrial or breast cancer, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Hormonal birth control helps clear up acne related to hormonal fluctuations.

Step 2

Wash your face twice a day with a cleaner containing the acne-clearing ingredients salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. These products speed the turnover of skin cells, which helps keep pores unclogged.

Step 3

Apply an acne spot treatment to any problem areas. If the spot treatment contains the active ingredient, be careful when applying. Benzoyl peroxide bleaches clothing, pillowcases and anything else it comes in contact with until it dries.

Step 4

Smooth a non-comedogenic moisturizer over the skin. Non-comedogenic moisturizers do not clog pores, which reduces the chance of breakouts.

Step 5

Consider treatment with prescription medication. If hormonal birth control and adherance to a strict face-washing program do not prevent new acne from forming, ask your doctor about Accutane, a prescription medication taken orally that treats acne, or tretinoin, a topical prescription treatment that clears skin.
