How to Prevent Clogged Pores With Oily Skin
Skin oil, also known as sebum, is an important product of the body that moisturizes the skin. However, an overabundance of oil can initiate acne outbreaks because it stops being able to flow freely to the surface of the skin. Oil combines with bacteria and dead skin cells to clog pores, and skin problems can persist until something else steps in to help. If you are prone to oily skin, some treatments and daily habits will help prevent your pores from becoming clogged.
Wash your face and hair with gentle cleansers. Because scrubbing too harshly or too often with a harsh soap can irritate your skin, dermatologists recommend washing your face once to twice each day with a mild cleanser and warm water to remove excess oil, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. If your hair is on the oily side and you tend to develop acne at your hairline, use a gentle shampoo daily.
Eat fewer oily foods. Although acne isn't thought to be caused by any specific foods, eating oily foods may aggravate acne because the oil can linger on your skin, says the American Academy of Dermatology.
Apply only oil-free cosmetics. Just because you have acne doesn't mean you can't use makeup or sunscreen on your skin. To avoid clogging your pores, however, you only use cosmetics that are labeled "nonacnegenic," "noncomedogenic" or "water-based," which means that they are oil-free, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Buy an over-the-counter acne lotion. Acne lotions contain active ingredients that dry excess oil, according to the Mayo Clinic. You have many options to choose from at your local drug store, but the Mayo Clinic recommends buying a product that contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as its active ingredient.
Wash your hands and keep them away from your face. Resting your hands on your face and picking at your acne lesions can cause more oil and bacteria to touch your skin, says the Mayo Clinic. Wash your hands often, especially if you often unconsciously touch your face throughout the day or you need to apply makeup with your fingers. In addition to keeping your hands away from your face, consistently wipe down any objects that touch your face on a regular basis, such as your cell phone and your glasses.
Talk to a dermatologist about your medication options. She can recommend an over-the-counter lotion specific to your skin type or she may prescribe a more potent topical or oral medication to combat oil production and minimize other factors that lead to acne breakouts.
