Overview

Acne pustules are pus-filled blemishes on the skin characterized by inflammation. They occur when pores become clogged with oils, sebum and bacteria and are most common during periods of hormonal surges, such as during puberty, menstruation and pregnancy. To eliminate acne pustules and prevent them from returning, it is important to cleanse, medicate and moisturize the skin properly. By following this skin care regime regularly, you can help return skin to its naturally smooth appearance.

Step 1

Wash your skin with a soap designed for sensitive skin types. Most standard soaps contain ingredients that can irritate the skin, but a soap formulated for sensitive skin will cleanse without causing irritation or inflammation. Wet your face well with water, lather up the soap with your hands and gently spread the lather onto your face. Do not scrub or rub, as friction can exacerbate acne. Rinse well with water. Wash twice per day.

Step 2

Medicate your skin with a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream. Benzoyl peroxide cream is available in many strengths, but using a concentration higher than 2.5 percent can cause irritation and even itching, redness and burning. Spread a pea-sized amount of 2.5 percent cream onto your skin using your fingertips. Avoid rubbing the cream in too vigorously; simply allow the fingers to glide over your face until the cream has soaked in. Do this twice a day.

Step 3

Moisturize with an oil-free moisturizing lotion. Many people medicate their skin with benzoyl peroxide cream without following with a moisturizer. This can leave the skin overly dry, which can cause the skin to overproduce oils in order to compensate for the lack of hydration. An oil-free moisturizer will hydrate the skin without clogging it with oils that can encourage acne. Spread a dime-sized amount of the moisturizing lotion onto your skin twice a day after using the benzoyl peroxide cream.
