How to Prevent Acne on the Face
Your face truly takes a beating. It’s always exposed to damaging environmental elements, from pollution to scorching heat to frigid cold. When you commit to an acne treatment routine for your face, you need to keep in mind that your skin could be sensitive to abrasive cleansers and bacteria-killing medications. By striking a delicate balance between using aggressive medications and a soothing moisturizer, you can prevent breakouts and maintain a healthy, radiant complexion.
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser first thing in the morning. It’s best to use a fragrance-free soap. Perfumes can dry skin and may cause irritation.
Apply 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide to your forehead, chin and around your nose. Apply the medication to your cheeks if you break out there.
Daniel Kern reports that benzoyl peroxide works by oxygenating the skin and creating an environment that is uninhabitable by the bacteria that causes acne. Benzoyl peroxide will also cause pimples to dry and peel.
Benzoyl peroxide also comes in formulations of 5 and 10 percent. Kern explains that the lower-formulated medication of 2.5 percent works just as well, but is less irritating.
Apply moisturizer to your face after the benzoyl peroxide is completely dry. Use a moisturizer with an added SPF or use a sunscreen labeled non-comedogenic, which means that it will not cause breakouts.
Wash your face in the evening or before bed. Remove all makeup, medication and moisturizer residue. The American Academy of Dermatology or AAD explains that cleansing your skin helps remove excess surface oils and dead skin cells.
Washing twice daily--morning and evening--is usually all that is necessary. However, washing a third time, especially if you wear a lot of makeup, should not be harmful to your skin.
Wipe your face with a salicylic acid pad or use a cleanser with salicylic acid. This medication works by sloughing off dead skin cells, which can clog pores and cause acne to form.
