How to Prevent Acne on the Back When Using Sunscreen
Though acne is typically caused by dead skin and excess oil clogging the pores, it is possible for sunscreens to exacerbate the problem. If your sunscreen is oil-based, the product can actually help to trap dead skin in your pores, which blocks oil secretion from the sebaceous gland. This can eventually lead to the development of a papule, pustule or comedone along the skin. However, there are things you can do to prevent acne due to sunscreen.
Select a sunscreen that is noncomedogenic and nonacnegenic. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreens with these labels because they're oil free and shouldn't cause blackheads, whiteheads or pimples.
Shower as soon as you come in from the sun. To further help prevent acne on the back due to sunscreens, make sure to shower or wash your body after you no longer need the sun protection factor, or SPF. A gentle cleanser is best.
Apply an acne cream to your shoulders and back. If you're prone to getting acne, apply an over-the-counter acne cream after showering. Even when there isn't any acne present, this type of product removes dead skin and dries excess oil, according to the Mayo Clinic, which should help to prevent acne.
Keep your hair off your back. The natural oil in your hair can increase the likelihood of clogged pores along the back, so keep your hair off your skin, especially if you're prone to acne or have fairly oily hair.
Stay out of the sun. According to the National Institutes of Health, you should stay out of the sun if you're currently suffering from acne. You can be mistaking sunscreen as the cause for your acne, when it may instead be sun exposure that is worsening your condition.
